Providence, RI- The Brown University men's soccer team is set to take on Bryant University in the 2010 season opener on Friday afternoon at Bryant's Sutton Field. The match, which will begin at 3:30 p.m., is the first contest of the inaugural Ocean State Soccer Classic. The Bears are coming off an 11-3-5 season as the team earned a 5-2 mark in the Ivy League to make its 24th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. With 20 returning from the 2009 squad, including senior captains David Walls (Leeds, England) and Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN), the team will look to build on its success with first-year head coach Patrick Laughlin.
Junior First Team All-Ivy selection Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) returns to the lineup after leading the Bears with five goals and six assists last season. Adding to the offense will be junior forward Austin Mandel (Tarzana, CA) and sophomore midfielder Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NY), who added five goals apiece last year.
Walls, a third team NSCAA Northeast Region selection and an Honorable Mention All-Ivy honoree, and sophomore Dylan Remick (Inverness, IL) will anchor Brown's back line this season, as the two helped the squad to seven shutouts last season. First Team All-Ivy goalkeeper Grandstrand will be back in net after an impressive 10-3-5 record last year which included five shutouts.
Brown leads the all-time series 8-0 against Bryant, as the Bears earned their first win against the Bulldogs in 1982 (2-0). In the last eight years, Brown has only allowed Bryant to score four goals, as the Bears have racked up 34.
Last season, the Bulldogs posted a 5-12-1 mark and a 3-6-1 record in just its second season playing Division I soccer. Senior forward Tom Nelan (East Haddam, CT) rejoins the lineup after started in 13 of 18 contests and added two goals for the offense. Senior Sean Kaukas (Glastonbury, CT) was Bryant's assist leader with three, and senior Erik Lekstrom (Worcester, MA) followed behind with two.
Brown will then host both the consolation and championship games of the Ocean State Classic on Monday.
