New Haven, CT- Freshman defender Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NJ) scored in the 81st minute of play to help the Brown men's soccer team (9-2-5, 4-2 Ivy) to a 2-1 victory against Yale (5-8-3, 2-4 Ivy) at Reese Stadium this afternoon.
Scott Armburst put Yale on the scoreboard first at the 4:12 mark when he nailed one past Brown goalkeeper Paul Granstrand (Orono, MN) from point-blank range off a setup from Andy Shorten. But the Bears clawed back and showed their resilience once again to tie the game at the 22:52 mark when sophomore T.J. Popilizio (Rexford, NY) put a diving header past goalkeeper Travis Chulick. Both David Walls (Leeds, England) and Taylor Gorman (Freeport, ME) were credited with assists.
The Bears outshot Yale 3-1 in the first 45 minutes of play, and dominated in corner kicks, 10-1, as the game was tied 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Bears and Bulldogs battled in the second period, as Brown tallied seven shots to Yale's two. Just when it seemed Brown would earn its sixth tie of the season, Popilizio passed the ball to McNamara, who drove one past Chulick at the 81:21 mark to give Bruno a 2-1 edge over the Bulldogs and the eventual win.
Grandstrand led the defense with one save in net in his 90 minutes of play and moved to 8-2-5 on the year. Gorman had a team-high three shots, as Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ) and McNamara both recorded two shots with one on goal.
The Bears ended the game with a 10-3 advantage in shots and corner kicks.
Brown will close out its regular season when it hosts Dartmouth at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, at Stevenson Field.
