Brown Powers Past Adelphi to Claim adidas-Brown Soccer Classic Title
Providence, RI- The Brown men’s soccer team (2-0-1) earned a 2-0 win over Adelphi University (1-1-2) to claim the adidas-Brown Soccer Classic Championship going 2-0 this weekend, which included a victory over SMU on Friday night. Brown’s Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) was named the tournament’s Offensive MVP, as sophomore Evan Coleman (Arlington, VA) was selected as the tournament’s Defensive MVP. Sophomore Austin Mandel (Tarzana, CA), junior goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN), junior captain David Walls (Leeds, England) and senior midfielder Nick Elenz-Martin (Encinitas, CA) were also selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Although Brown’s game didn’t end until 11:00 p.m. on Friday night, the Bears showed no signs of tired legs as they dominated Adelphi in this afternoon’s 2-0 victory. The Bears had an 8-2 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes of play, and went on to out-shoot the Panthers 15-8.
Brown came out of the gates firing and had some great looks on Adelphi’s goal. Coleman had Bruno’s first look on the goal just two minutes after kickoff that went high, followed by a blocked shot of TJ Thompson’s (Atkinson, NH). Rosa almost scored for Brown 11:27 minutes in, but Adelphi’s goalkeeper, Kyle Blackmer, was able to stop the ball and pick up his first of three saves.
Blacker made a great stop at the 36:51 mark on a shot by Mandel, and just three minutes later he came up with the golden goal after blasting a shot from the left side at the 39:58 mark on a pass from Mike Manella (Toluca Lake, CA). The goal was Mandel’s second of the season, as he picked up his first in Friday’s game against SMU.
Adelphi kept the pressure on the Bears throughout the second half, and picked up 13 fouls in the final 45 minutes of play to tally 18 for the game. Adelphi had a few looks on goal, but Grandstrand and Bruno’s dynamite defensive line shut down any chances. Grandstrand improved his record to 2-0-1 on the year and earned his second shutout, as he picked up five saves in today’s contest.
It was just two minutes into the second half when Brown scored its second goal of the day. Rosa booted a low left shot from about 12 yards out after receiving a pass from rookie defender Dylan Remick (Inverness, IL). Rosa earned his first goal of the year, while Remick posted his first assist.
Brown is back in action at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to Smithfield, RI, to take on Bryant, and will then challenge URI at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 19 in Kingston,RI.
