Former Men’s Soccer Player, Edward Thurston, Named to USASA National Select Team

Providence, RI- USASA Men’s National Select Team Coach Aleks Mihailovic has recently named six members of the Aegean Hawks Football Club to the roster for the National Select Team’s upcoming exhibitions against the Republic of Ireland’s Amateur National Select Team in San Francisco. Former Brown soccer defender Edward Thurston ’04 (Washington, D.C.) was one of 50 finalists for a roster of 18 players, six of which play together on the Aegean Hawks.

The event will mark the second time USASA and Ireland meet on the field. In 2007, the USASA Men’s National Select Team successfully played a two-game series against the Ireland National Amateur Team in Ireland with games in Cork followed by a second game in Tipperary Town. The USASA National Select Team was dominant in both games beating Ireland 1-0 and 2-0, respectively. The upcoming international match will be played at Kezer Stadium in San Francisco at 7:30 p.m. PT on Sept. 26. The game will be available through an audio webcast (http://tinyurl.com/USASAvsIreland) so that fans around the world can be part of the experience.

Thurston was also instrumental in helping his team win the 2009 USASA National Amateur Cup last month in the USASA Finals in Orlando, Florida, and was the club’s first national amateur championship.

Playing for the Bears, Thurston competed in 49 games during his career with Brown and tallied four assists as a defender while concentrating in Economics. He was a graduate of Wilson High School where he was a four-year letter winner in soccer and also lettered in cross-country and wrestling.
