Walsh's Late Goal Lifts #15 Brown Over #18 Denver, 12-11

March 8, 2009

Providence, Rhode Island - Senior captain Jack Walsh (Chevy Chase, MD) scored his second goal of the game with 1:23 remaining to lift the 15th ranked Brown men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 12-11 victory over #18 Denver before an overflow crowd at Meister-Kavan Field. The win lifts the Bears to 3-1 overall, while Denver falls to 4-2 overall.

With the score tied, 11-11, Walsh struck on a feed from senior Kyle Hollingsworth (Darien, CT) from behind the net. Hollingsworth threaded the needle and Walsh one-timed the pass into the Pioneer net for the game-winning goal.

Denver had a chance to tie the game with 15 seconds remaining, but Brown All-American goalie Jordan Burke (Potomac, MD) turned aside a Pioneer shot from 15 yards out to preserve the victory. Burke finished the game with 10 saves for the Bears.

Brown sophomore attackman Andrew Feinberg (Owing Mills, MD) had a big day with three goals and three assists, while junior Brady Williams (Columbus, OH) also registered a hat-trick for the Bears. Hollingsworth finished with a goal and four assists.

The sea-saw battle had the Bears leading 3-0 in the first five minutes after two goals by Feinberg and another by senior Reade Seligmann (Essex Falls, NJ). The Pioneers clawed back, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game, 3-3 with 5:48 left in the first quarter.

Brown built a 5-3 lead after one quarter, following goals Williams and sophomore Jimmy Wittpenn (Mt. Sinai, NY).

The game slowed down considerably in the second quarter with each team scoring a goal, Williams netting his second goal of the game and Ilija Gajic scoring for the Pioneers to cut Brown's lead to 6-4 at the half.

Denver scored the first three goals of the second half to grab a 7-6 lead on a goal by Jamie Lincoln with 2:35 left in the third quarter. Feinberg's third goal and score by junior Jake Hardy (Framingham, MA) put the Bears back on top, 8-7, after three quarters.

The goals seemed to come in pairs in the fourth quarter, with Denver scoring twice to open the quarter and grab a 9-8 lead, and Brown answering once again, this time with Williams scoring his third goal and Hollingsworth adding his first goal of the game to lift the Bears to a 10-9 lead.

Denver's Mark Matthews's goal with 6:30 remaining tied the game at 10-10.

Just 28 seconds later, Walsh took a pretty feed from Feinberg at the Denver doorstep and gave the Bears an 11-10 advantage. But Joey Murphy's unassisted goal with 4:23 left in the game tied the game once again, 11-11.

Matthews, Murray and Todd Baxter netted two goals each for the Pioneers, with Matthews handing out three assists. Peter Lowell made 12 saves in goal for Denver.

Brown will be back in action again next Saturday, March 14, traveling to Amherst, Mass. to battle UMass. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at Garber Field.
