Men's Laxers Fall To Princeton In Ivy Title Game

Providence, Rhode Island - Senior attackman BJ Prager scored four goals to lead the defending national champion Princeton men's lacrosse team to a hard-fought 12-10 win over Brown and its eighth consecutive Ivy League Championship.

The win lifts Princeton to 8-4 overall, 5-1 in the Ivy League, and gives the third-ranked Tigers to an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship, which begins next weekend. Brown drops to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League.

Princeton, who never trailed in the game, opened up a 5-2 first quarter lead and never looked back. Sophomore Drew Casino scored just 25 seconds into the game, but Brown junior Chas Gessner (Hyattsville, MD) answered to tie the game, 1-1. The Tigers scored five of the next six goals, including three by Prager, to grab a 6-2 lead on a goal by senior Brendan Tierney at the 55-second mark of the second quarter.

The Bears rallied on goals by junior Jon Thompson (Freeport, ME) and freshman Chazz Woodson (St. George, VA) to trail, 6-4, at the 6:03 mark of the second quarter. The Tigers closed out the half with goals by Sean Hartofilis and junior Josh White to grab an 8-4 lead at intermission.

The Bears clawed back once again, with Thompson and junior Michael Hughes (Rockville Centre, NY) scoring third quarter goals to cut the Princeton advantage to 8-6 at the 7:15 mark. But the Tigers pulled away to a 10-6 lead after three quarters on goals by senior Dan Clark and White.

Senior Jimmy Mormile(Oceanside, NY) opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal at the 53 second mark, but the Tigers' Owen Daly scored to again give the Tigers a four-goal lead, 11-7. Gessner scored his second goal of the game to pull the Bears to within three goals, 12-8, but Prager scored his fourth goal at the 7:46 mark to give the Tigers a 12-8 advantage.

The Bears made a last minute run at the Tigers with Woodson scoring at 11:08 and Thompson scoring at 13:30.

Thompson led the Bears with 4 goals and one assist, while Gessner and Woodson added two goals each. In addition to Prager's four goals, Daley and Whie added two goals each, while senior Matt Trevenen handed out three assists.

Brown goalie Mike Levin (Pittsford, NY) registered 13 saves, while Princeton goalie Julian Gould made 12 saves for the Tigers.

Brown is the host site for the North First Round doubleheader of the NCAA Playoffs next Saturday, May 11th. Game times are 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m. at Brown Stadium.
