March 20, 2004
Boston, Mass. - Senior Charles Towers scored a career high five goals to lead the Brown men's lacrosse team to a 10-5 over 16th-ranked UMass in a game played on the Harvard campus. The win lifts Brown to a 4-0 overall record, its best start since 1992, while the Minutemen fell to 2-4 overall.
Brown, playing its fourth straight game away from home, got off to a slow start, falling behind the Minutemen by a 2-0 margin with 4:32 left in the first quarter. The Bears broke the game open in a span of about 20 minutes, scoring the game's next six goals.
After freshman David Madeira scored late in the first quarter, Towers tied the game, 2-2, with a man up goal at 9:54 of the second quarter. Towers gave Brown the lead for good, 3-2, scoring at the 7:26 mark. The Bears received goals from freshman Alex Buckley, sophomore Kyle Wailes and junior Chaz Woodson to grab a 6-2 lead with 4:10 left in the third quarter.
The Minutemen got back into the game with three straight goals, including two goals by Ryan Connolly and one by Matt Tundo, to pull to within one goal of the Bears, 6-5, with 1:27 remaining in quarter three. But Towers answered the call once again for Brown, scoring with 46 seconds left in the third quarter to change the momentum and give Brown a 7-5 advantage.
