Position: Assistant Coach
Beginning his sixth season on the Brown coaching staff and his 12th year as a coach on the college level, Jim Finlay is considered one of the outstanding young defensive specialists and recruiters in the nation. As defensive coordinator for the Bears, Finlay helped the 2004 Brown defense to a first place rank in the Ivy League with a 7.64 goals against average, which ranked seventh in the nation. He also coached All-American goalie Mike Levin, who posted 11.5 saves per game. He coached the 2000 Brown defensive unit to the seventh best goals against average (8.33 gaa) in the nation, while his man-down unit was ranked fourth nationally (80%). In addition to his recruiting duties, Finlay has responsibilities for opponent scouting. A native of Windsor, CT, Finlay came to Brown after working as an assistant coach at Notre Dame for the previous two years. While at Notre Dame, the Irish captured the 1999 Great Western Lacrosse League and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, with Findlay working with the defense and man-down unit. He served as the top assistant and defensive coordinator at Springfield College for three seasons, compiling a 25-16 record. In 1995, Springfield posted a 13-1 mark and advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Division II tournament. Finlay graduated from Gettysburg in May of 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and classical studies. A standout defenseman, he was a three-year letterwinner on teams that posted a 33-9 overall mark and captured two Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. He went on to earn a master of physical education and athletic administration from Springfield College in August 1997. Findlay is assistant director of the Brown University Lacrosse Camp, and the Challenge Lacrosse Camp. An excellent speaker, Findlay was selected to speak at the 2003 US Lacrosse coaches convention this past January. He currently resides in Barrington, Rhode Island.
