Men's Lacrosse Falls To Providence, 12-11, In Overtime

Providence, R.I. – Sean Leahey scored his fourth goal of the game with 2:41 left in the first overtime to lift the Providence men's lacrosse team to a 12-11 win over Brown, capturing the Ocean State Cup at Stevenson-Pincince Field Tuesday evening.


Playing their fifth overtime game of the season, the Friars improve to 5-8 overall, while Brown falls to 5-6 on the season.


Brown held an 11-9 lead midway through the fourth quarter on consecutive goals by junior Michael Panepinto (Needham, MA) and senior middy Stephen Hudak (Rydal, PA) at the 7:16 mark.


The Friars answered with a goal by Leahey with 6:36 left, and tied the game, 11-11, on a goal by Joshua Keller with 2:50 remaining in regulation.


Hudak paced the Bears with four goals and two assists.  Panepinto, sophomore Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) and junior Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA) had two goals each, while freshman George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) scored a goal and added two assists.


In addition to Leahey's four goals, Keller and Ryan Nawrocki scored two goals each for the Friars.


Both goalies excelled in the overtime game with Brown sophomore Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) making 13 saves and Tate Boyce making nine saves for the Friars.


Providence out-shot the Bears by a 42-41 margin and held a 27-25 advantage in ground balls.
