PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Nick Mariano's five goals led the No. 13 UMass Minutemen (4-0) to a 15-2 win over the Brown men's lacrosse team (1-1) in its home opener on Saturday at Stevenson Field.
Sophomore goaltender, Jack Kelly (West Islip, N.Y.), fell to 1-1 this season as he surrendered 11 goals while turning away seven UMass shots in 45 minutes of action. An impressive showing by UMass' Zach Oliveri turned away the Brown attack, as he stopped 10 shots while only allowing one goal in 51:34 of play.
An early hole and turnovers plagued the Bears on Saturday, as the Minutemen forced Brown into 17 giveaways on the day. Sean Cleary opened the scoring with back-to-back goals, staking the Minutemen to an early 2-0 advantage. Tallies from Brendan Schroeder and Matt Whippen extended the margin to four before Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, Md.) got the Bears on the board with a man-up goal with 47 seconds to play in the first quarter.
Brown slowed down the UMass attack in the second stanza but couldn't close the gap as Grant Whiteway and Mariano struck to give the Minutemen a 6-1 halftime lead.
Five Brown turnovers in the third quarter gave way to an 11-1 lead for Minutemen after Mariano netted three goals, including his fourth marker of the day at the 6:47 mark.
Brown will return to action on Wednesday as they play host to the Hartford Hawks at Stevenson Field. Faceoff is slated for 4 p.m.
