Providence, R.I. - Quinnipiac junior goalie Gill Connors made 20 saves to stymie Brown's offense, leading the Bobcats to a 9-7 win over the Bears at Stevenson Field in the season opening game for both teams.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 5-1 lead with 2:17 left in the first quarter before Brown's offense got on track. The Bears settled down and tallied the game's next five goals, starting with a goal by junior Sam Hurster at the end of the first quarter to cut the Bobcat advantage to 5-2.
Bears' senior George Sherman gave Brown its first lead, 6-5, on a pass from Hurster with 10:39 left in the third quarter, a lead the Bears took into the final quarter of play.
Brown's defense held the Bobcats scoreless for more than 38 minutes before Dylan Webster tied the game for Quinnipiac with 8:38 left in the game. Three more Bobcat goals on their next three possessions sealed the game, 9-6, following Michael Sagl's goal at the 5:37 mark of the fourth quarter.
Hurster finished with two goals and an assist to lead the Bears, while Ferguson added two assists with his goal. Blynn's collegiate debut was successful with two goals and an assist.
The Bears split time in the goal, with junior Wills Curley getting the start and allowing five first half goals, while making four saves. Freshman Jack Kelly played the second half and made two saves, while allowing four goals.
The Bobcats were led by Brendan Wilber, who netted three goals.
Quinnipiac had the better of play in the face-off x, where Dylan Webster captured 12 of 19 face-offs.
The Bears are back in action again next Saturday, March 2, battling #5 UMass in Amherst, Mass. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
