Hamden, CT – Freshman Nick Piroli (Black River, NY) scored three goals and Brown recovered from an early two goal deficit to scored six straight goals over 11 minutes, and cruise to a 12-7 season-opening win over Quinnipiac at Quinnipiac's Turf Field.
"I'm proud of the team for their united effort," said Brown head coach Lars Tiffany. "I saw several different men step in and execute their roles. I'm especially happy with the play of Will Round, who played extremely well, especially in the first half, in his first start of the season."
Piroli, the first Brown first year attackman to start since Andrew Feinberg in 2008, registered a hat-trick in is collegiate debut with three goals to lead all Brown scorers.
"What a great way for Nick to begin his collegiate career," said Tiffany. "Brown fans will find out that he's a great feeder as well as a scorer."
Senior Dan O'Brien (Kensington, MD) had a big day with five points, scoring two goals and handing out three assists. Sophomore Sam Huster (St. Louis, MO) also added two goals.
Sophomore goalie Will Round (Mt. Lebanon, PA) was impressive as the Bears' starting net-minder, making 12 saves, including 10 in the first half.
Junior Alex Jones (Annapolis, MD) registered Brown's first goal of the season, making an end-to-end run to tie the score, 1-1, at the 10:01 mark of the first quarter.
Consecutive goals by Basil Kostaras gave the Bobcats a 3-1 lead with 2:46 left in the first quarter.
Brown's Rob Schlesinger (Medfield, MA) scored with 17 seconds remaining to cut Quinnipiac's lead to 3-2 after one quarter, and ignited a 6-0 Brown run that resulted in a 7-3 Brown lead.
Junior George Sherman (Greenwich, CT) tied the game, 3-3, with a pretty spin move at 11:43 of the second quarter, and Hurster gave Brown the lead for good, 4-3, with 11:08 left in the quarter on a pass from O'Brien.
The Brown run continued when Piroli scored his first collegiate goal on a pass from senior Parker Brown (San Francisco, CA) just 10 seconds later, lifting the Bears to a 5-3 advantage. Piroli scored again with 4:31 left in the quarter to extend Brown's lead to 6-3.
O'Brien kept up the Brown scoring with an unassisted goal with 4:00 left in the half, lifting the Bears to a 7-3 lead.
Quinnipiac stopped the Brown momentum briefly with a goal by Brendan Wilber, but Parker Brown responded with a goal with just 10 seconds left in the half to give Brown an 8-4 halftime lead.
Hurster opened the scoring in the second half and gave Brown a 9-5 lead with his second goal at 8:44 of the third quarter.
Following a Bobcat goal, goals junior Shane McHugh (Delray Beach, FL) and Parker Brown gave the Bears an 11-5 advantage after three quarters.
Quinnipiac made a fourth quarter run at the Bears, scoring two straight goals to cut Brown's lead to pull to within 11-7 of the Bears. But Piroli's third goal iced the game for the Bears.
The Bears will be back in action again on Saturday, March 3, hosting UMass at Meister-Kavan Field. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
