PROVIDENCE, RI - Former Brown hockey standout Yann Danis '04 (Saint-Jerome, QUE) has made the opening day roster for the Montreal Canadiens, who begin their season tonight at Boston. Danis is one of six rookies to have made the lineup for the 2005-2006 season and will serve as the back-up goalie to Jose Theodore.
Danis signed with Montreal as a free agent on March 19, 2004, and played for the Hamilton Bulldogs last season, Montreal's AHL affiliate. In 55 career games with the Bulldogs, including two at the end of the 2003-2004 season, Danis posted a 30-17-6 record, including a 28-17-6 record last season. He earned a 2.34 GAA last year with five shutouts and a .924 save percentage.
In five preseason games with Montreal this season, Danis went 4-0, including two complete games and four starts. He stopped 84 of 95 shots over the five games for a 3.11 GAA and an .884 save percentage. In his first complete game, a 4-3 overtime victory over Boston, he stopped 21 of 24 shots.
Following the game, Montreal head coach Claude Julien said, "He made the big saves when he had to. He may have wanted a few of those shots back that got by him, but this was his first full NHL game. We were proud with his overall performance tonight."
In his very next start, Danis made 28 saves on 31 shots while handing the Ottawa Senators their first preseason loss and earning the game's First Star honors.
Elsewhere among the professional ranks, Scott Ford '04 (Fort St. John, BC) has signed a 25-game contract with the Boston Bruins.
