Grillo Named Head Coach of USA Under-18 Select Team

July 20, 2007

Brown head men's ice hockey coach Roger Grillo, who just completed his 10th season behind the Brown bench, has been named the head coach of the 2007 United States Under-18 Select Team, in an announcement made by USA Hockey. This marks the second time in three years that Grillo, a USA Hockey Level 5 certified coach, will serve as the head coach of this team. In 2004, he guided the Under-18 Select Team to a fourth place finish in the 2004 Under-18 Junior World Cup.

This year, Grillo will lead 21 players to compete in the 2007 Under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka from August 14-18 in Piestany, Slovakia and Hodonin, Czech Republic. Joining Grillo on the coaching staff is ECAC Hockey colleague Seth Appert, who just completed his first season as RPI's head coach.

Team USA will face Czech Republic in an exhibition game in Czech Republic on August 12th, before official competition begins against Russia on August 14th in Slovakia. They will then face Finland on August 15th and Slovakia on August 16th (both in Slovakia) before semifinal action begins on August 18th.

Team members were chosen from the 2007 USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp, which was held July 7-13 at the National Hockey Center at St. Cloud State University and featured many of America's best hockey players born in 1990.
