The Brown men's ice hockey team, which finished in fifth place in the ECAC, is set to begin action in the 2003 ECAC Tournament. The Bears will host 12th seeded Princeton in a best-of-three series on Friday, March 7, Saturday, March 8, and Sunday, March 9, if needed. All games begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played until there is a winner.
Brown finished the regular season with a 12-11-5 overall record and a 10-8-4 ECAC record, narrowly missing a first-round bye for the playoffs. Junior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE), who earned Second Team All-Ivy honors earlier today, and sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) are the Bears' leading scorers with 34 and 30 points respectively, as Brown finished with two 30-point scorers for the first time since 1995. In addition, senior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB), who earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors, is third on the team with 22 points, and leads all defensemen. Senior forward Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA) and junior defenseman Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) round out the top five scorers on the team with 18 and 17 points respectively.
The Bears had a third All-Ivy selection, in junior goaltender Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE), who earned Second Team recognition. One of the most consistent players for Brown, Danis looks to back-stop the Bears as they look to move on to the ECAC Quarterfinals next weekend in a best-of-three series at Yale. The school record holder in career shutouts (7), single-season shutouts (4), goals against average in a season (1.86), and save percentage in a season (.938), he currently boasts a 2.48 goals against average, 15th in the country, and a .922 save percentage, seventh in the country.
