PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown senior captain Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) and junior Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) have been named to the 2008 All-Ivy team in a vote by the six Ivy League men's hockey coaches. A First Team selection a year ago, Hurley has been named to the First Team for the second straight year. Garbutt, who was Brown's leading scorer in Ivy League games with 11 points (5g, 6a), is making his first appearance on the All-Ivy Team, earning Honorable Mention honors.
The Bears' top defenseman, Hurley was named First Team All-Ivy for the second straight year. A true two-way defenseman, Hurley finished second on the team with nine points (1g, 8a) in Ivy League contests, 10th overall in the league and first among defensemen. He was also fourth overall in the League with eight assists, while his five power play points (1g, 4a) was also fourth. Currently, Hurley is third on the team with 17 points (3g, 14a) and ranks second on the team with 14 assists. He also appears in every single career offensive category for defenseman, ranking seventh with 77 points, sixth with 22 goals, and sixth with 55 assists. His 55 career assists is also 26th all-time at Brown.
Garbutt is making his first appearance on the All-Ivy team this season, after leading all Brown players with 11 points (5g, 6a) in nine Ivy League games, sixth overall in the League. His five goals ranked fourth in the League. Garbutt currently ranks second on the team in scoring with a career-high 20 points (9g, 11a), surpassing his previous career-high by seven points, while leading the Bears in both goals and power play goals (5). He has posted at least one point in Brown's last four games with seven total points (3g, 4a) during this time, including a four-point game (1g, 3a) against Dartmouth.
The Bears, which closed the regular season with a 6-19-4 record, begin competition in the ECAC Hockey playoffs this weekend when they travel to Quinnipiac. Brown, seeded 11th in the 12-team tournament, will face the 6th-seeded Bobcats in a best-of-three series beginning Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Action continues Saturday at 7:00 and then Sunday at 7:00, if necessary.
