For the third time this season, a Brown University men's ice hockey player was honored with a weekly ECAC award. Freshman Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week after a one-assist, one-goal outing in leading Brown to a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin and an assist in the next night's loss to #6 New Hampshire.
Haggett, who earned Rookie of the Week honors for the first time in his career, scored the game-winning goal with just 2:24 remaining in the Wisconsin game, breaking a 1-1 tie. He also assisted on Brown's first goal of the game, which gave the Bears a 1-0 lead for nearly 40 minutes.
The two points were his fourth and fifth in three games and he added his sixth point in four games the following night in Brown's loss to #6 New Hampshire in the Championship game of the Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown, hosted by Wisconsin. For his efforts, he earned All-Tournament honors.
With the win over Wisconsin, the Bears knocked the Badgers out of the Championship game for just the fourth time in 13 tournaments and ended Wisconsin's hopes of winning consecutive titles for the first time since 1994.
Haggett, a graduate of Northwood Prep, also played with the Ottawa Junior Senators of the CJHL before attending Brown. His three goals and four assists leads the class of 2005, sixth in the ECAC among freshman, and is fourth on the team in overall scoring. The Bears resume ECAC play, when they travel to the New York Capital District for games at RPI and Union on Friday and Saturday respectively.
