Box Score

STORRS, CT - Senior Chris Poli's (Medfield, MA) third goal of the year midway through the third period lifted the Brown men's ice hockey team (1-8-4, 1-3-3 ECAC) to a 1-1 tie with Army (6-7-3, 6-4-2 AHA) on Sunday afternoon at UConn's Freitas Ice Forum in the third place game of the 2007 Toyota UConn Classic.

The two teams played a relatively quiet first period, with Army holding a slight, 9-6, advantage in shots, taking the only penalty of the period, and scoring the game's first goal with 5:02 left in the period. A quick re-start to sophomore Dan Rosen's (Syosset, NY) right led to a face-off win for the Black Knights as sophomore Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) wasn't ready for the draw. The puck went back to Cody Omliusik, who fired a low shot from the top of the left face-off circle that deflected into the opposite corner off Rosen's left leg pad.

Army nearly took a 2-0 lead just 1:27 later, but Rosen saved Owen Meyer's break-away bid to hold the score at 1-0 in favor of the Black Knights.

The two teams played scoreless hockey during the middle period, which had Brown killing three penalties, including one that carried 1:53 over into the third period.

The Bears earned back-to-back power-play chances early in the third period, including a two-man advantage for 1:19, but Army was able to kill the threat to hold onto the 1-0 lead.

Poli salvaged the tie for the Bears at 11:03 when he collected the puck off a face-off win by senior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) and beat Army's Joe Spracklen on a wrap-around from the right side. Junior Sean Muncy (Chesterfield, MO) also earned an assist on the goal.

The Bears nearly tallied the game-winner with just 20 seconds remaining when junior Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) picked up a lose puck and dropped it for freshman Harry Zolnierczyk (Toronto, ONT), whose wrist shot from between the face-off circles bounced off the back of Spracklen. However, an Army defenseman was able to keep the puck from going over the goal line and then Spracklen covered it, as the teams headed for overtime.

Each team had chances to win it in the extra period, but Rosen made four saves for the Bears and Army's defense helped to clear pucks for the Black Knights, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Rosen finished with 30 saves, while Spracklen, playing in his first career appearance, stopped 20 shots for Army. Having played 11 of their first 13 games on the road, including the past eight in a row, the Bears return home to host Yale at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 5th, their first home game since November 10th.
