DENVER, CO - Senior captain Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) knocked in the rebound of his own shot at 1:22 of overtime to lift the Brown men's ice hockey team (7-4-3, 3-3-1 ECACHL) to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Mercyhurst (4-12-4, 4-8-2 Atlantic Hockey) on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Wells Fargo Denver Cup.

The Bears opened the overtime with 55 seconds left on a Mercyhurst power-play. Brown killed the man-advantage and broke into the zone on an odd-man rush after senior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) blocked the Lakers' final shot of the power-play. Brown got a few shots off and the puck bounced around in the zone before Roux played it up to junior Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) at the right point. Baier crossed it to freshman Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB), who fired a shot on net. The rebound bounced out to Dersch, who had his first attempt saved, but he collected his own rebound and knocked the puck over Wakefield's shoulder, clearing the Brown bench.

After getting outshot, 48-23, in Friday's game against UMass-Lowell, the Bears came out with a sense of urgency in the first period and dominated the Lakers, outshooting Mercyhurst 16-7 and generating several quality chances.

With Brown on its first power-play of the game, junior Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) had Mercyhurst's Jordan Wakefield beat, but his shot from the top of the right face-off circle clanged off the far post at 7:16. Less than two minutes later, at 9:11, freshman Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) caught Wakefield out of position and fired the rebound of a shot from junior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) on the open net, but Wakefield got back just in time and made a sprawling glove-save to keep the game scoreless.

The Bears continued to dominate early in the second period, but a defensive zone turnover six minutes into the period gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 6:06. Brown turned the puck over just inside the blueline, allowing Mercyhurst to break in with a two-on-one advantage. Freshman goalie Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) saved the first shot, but the rebound bounced into the slot and deflected nto the back of the net.

Sophomore Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) knotted the game at 18:17, scoring off a feed from junior Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB). Vokes won a defensive zone face-off back to McNary, who hit Vokes with the pass in the neutral zone. Vokes broke in with junior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) on a two-on-one, but kept the puck and fired it past Wakefield.

However, just 30 seconds later, the Lakers regained the one-goal lead, when Rosen got a piece of a shot by Cullen Eddy, but the puck trickled over the goal-line and into the back of the net.

The Bears opened the third period with 1:50 remaining on a power-play that had carried over from the second period. Junior David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI) got the puck to Poli at the bottom of the right face-off circle and his initial shot was saved. However, Poli collected his own rebound, skated the puck up to the right point and blasted a shot that beat Wakefield stick-side just 1:41 into the period.

Brown earned a five-minute power-play with 11:31 remaining, but the Lakers' penalty-kill was up to the task and prevented the Bears from gaining a lead.

Bruno played the last 1:05 of regulation on the penalty kill and Dersch nearly put Brown ahead with a short-handed bid, but he was unable to lift the puck over the sprawled Wakefield.

Neither team could score in the final minute as the Bears headed for their third straight overtime contest.

After killing the remaining 55 seconds of the Mercyhurst power-play, senior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) skated the puck into the zone and the Bears maintained possession for the remaining 27 seconds, before Dersch netted the game-winner.

Rosen, who leads the nation in both goals against average and save percentage, finished with 20 saves, while Wakefield made 54 stops for Mercyhurst. Brown returns to action next Saturday, January 6, when it travels to New Haven to face Yale in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
