Raiders Score Three Third Period Goals to Tie Bears 3-3
Dec. 22, 2005
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (2-9-2) held onto a 3-0 lead heading into the final 20:00 against #11 Colgate (10-3-4), but the Raiders scored three goals in a span of 6:00 to earn a 3-3 tie with the Bears in the consolation game of the Providence College Hockey Holiday Classic.
With both teams coming off lop-sided losses in their first round games, the Bears dominated the first period, outshooting Colgate 10-6. After nearly 20:00, Brown's relentless attack paid off when sophomore leading scorer Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) back-handed the puck into the back of the net from the right face-off circle. Prough collected the puck from freshman Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) along the right wing and skate in before deflecting the puck off Mark Dekanich's right shoulder, lighting the lamp at 17:44 of the first.
The first part of the second period featured back-and-forth action, but just after the eight-minute mark, the Bears' fourth line, junior Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT), senior Cory Caouette (Devon, ALB), and sophomore Todd Johnson (Riverside, CT), put together a great shift, sustaining pressure in the Raiders' zone, while generating several scoring chances. Colgate was unable to clear the zone and after Brown changed a few skaters, junior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) gave Brown a 2-0 lead at 8:58 when he knocked in the rebound of a shot from Caouette.
Sophomore Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) increased the Bears' lead to 3-0 with just seven seconds left in the second period when he notched a power-play goal off assists from Ihnacak and sophomore David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI).
Colgate finally solved sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) at 6:27 of the third period when Eric Main's shot from just inside the blue-line beat D'Alba stick-side. The Raiders came to within one just 41 seconds later when Tyler Burton knocked in the rebound of a Jesse Winchester shot at 7:08.
The Bears nearly went up 4-2 with just over 10:00 remaining in the game when Hurley's shot beat Dekanich, but hit the post and was cleared away by the Colgate defense just in time. At 12:27 of the period, the Raiders knotted the game at 3-3, when Ryan Smyth's shot was saved by D'Alba. However, the puck bounced over and behind D'Alba, and he wasn't able to clear it away before it crossed the goal line.
The two teams then played a 5:00 overtime, but neither team could find the back of the net as the game ended in a 3-3 draw.
D'Alba finished with 24 saves in net for Brown. The Bears are off again for two weeks and resume action on January 6, when they travel to Quinnipiac for their first ECACHL action since hosting Yale on December 2.
