Bears Score Three Goals, But Not Enough, As Yale Defeats The Bears, 4-3

Dec. 6, 2002

NEW HAVEN, CT - The Bears and Bulldogs traded goals for the entire game as Yale (7-3-0, 7-2-0) defeated Brown (4-5-1, 4-5-1), 4-3, in an ECAC and Ivy League men's ice hockey contest on Friday evening at Ingalls Rink.

The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead as Chris Higgins fired a point-blank shot from between the two face-off circles past junior Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) just 39 seconds into the contest.

Junior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) knotted the contest at 1-1 at 10:43 of the first period after a great play by junior Adam Saunders (Moose Jaw, SASK) to intercept a Yale clearing attempt, bringing Eli netminder Peter Cohen out of the net. Fellow junior Shane Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) found Macri at the point, who quickly rifled a slapshot into the net for his third goal of the season.

However, the Bulldogs regained the one-goal lead 23 seconds later as Evan Wax scored his ninth goal of the year to give Yale a 2-1 advantage with 8:54 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Bears tied the contest again at 17:28 of the first, as they scored their second goal of the game, equaling their goal-total from the previous four games. This time, it was senior Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA), who netted his second goal of the year. Junior Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) poked the puck back into the Brown zone on a Yale clearing attempt and found sophomore leading scorer Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) on his left. Haggett sent a centering pass to Kirley, and the Assistant Captain beat Cohen, sending the teams into the first intermission dead-locked at two.

Following the apparent pattern, the Bulldogs broke the tie, taking a 3-2 lead at 4:57 of the second period on a goal by Higgins.

For the third time of the night, Brown knotted the contest again as senior captain Tye Korbl (Barnstable, MA) tallied a short-handed goal at 11:39 of the second stanza, as the Bears scored a short-handed goal for the second game in a row. Yale went ahead again with a power-play goal by Higgins as he completed the hat-trick, with 4:57 remaining in the second period, which proved to be the game-winner as teams played through a scoreless third period.

Brown pulled Danis with 49 seconds remaining for an extra skater, but could not score the tying goal as the Bulldogs came away with a 4-3 win.

For the game, Danis finished with 23 saves. Brown returns to action tomorrow night at Princeton in the Bears' final game before taking a three-week exam break.
