Box Score

Providence, RI - In his first game back since missing three straight contests with an injury, junior captain Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) scored two goals and assisted a third to lead a trio of Bears, all with three points, as the Brown men's ice hockey team (1-6-2, 1-3-2) earned its first victory of the season, 5-4 over Union (6-5-1, 1-5-0) on Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.

The two teams played a wild first-period, in which they combined for five goals, including four in a span of 3:28. The Dutchmen took a 1-0 lead just 1:13 into the game, scoring 21 seconds into their first power-play chance of the game, as Brendan Milnamow beat junior Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) from the top of the left face-off circle.

Things settled down after the goal, but the two teams scored at a furious pace, starting 13 minutes later when Timberlake scored his first of the season to tie the game at 1-1. After back-to-back Union penalties gave Brown a two-man advantage for 52 seconds, the Bears' power-play unit capitalized on the man-up situation to tie the score. Freshman Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) passed the puck up to junior Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) at the top of the right circle, McMonagle inched closer to the net and ripped a shot from the high slot that Corey Milan saved. However, he couldn't corral the rebound and Timberlake, stationed at the top of the crease, was able to work the puck around Milan and tap it into the net.

Senior Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) gave Brown a 2-1 lead 1:47 later, and just two seconds after the Bears' second power-play had ended. Timberlake sent a long pass up the ice, which Union thought should have been icing. However, icing was waved off and senior Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) collected the puck behind the net. Vokes, who was trailing the play, broke in all alone, received the pass from Garbutt, and banked his shot off the cross-bar and into the back of the net, beating Milan glove-side.

Just 42 seconds after the goal, the Dutchmen went up on the power-play and they needed just 35 seconds to tie the game at 2-2. Rosen went to play the puck behind the net, but it took an odd bounce out in front, where Kelly Zajac lifted the puck into the open net at 17:07. Lane Caffaro gave Union a 3-2 lead 24 seconds later, on what was effectively another power-play after McMonagle broke both his stick and skate deep in Brown's offensive zone.

The Bears scored twice in a span of 54 seconds in the middle third of the second period to grab a 4-3 lead. Freshman Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) scored his first career goal at 7:22 to tie the game at 3-3, knocking in the rebound of a shot by freshman Mike Griffin (Hingham, MA), who earned an assist for the second straight game. Freshman Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) also assisted to pick up his first career point.

Timberlake's second of the game 54 seconds later at 8:16 gave Brown a 4-3 lead, as he redirected a feed from Buvinow six seconds into the Bears' third power-play of the game.

The Bears increased their lead to 5-3 4:05 into the second period with another power-play tally just 27 seconds into their fourth power-play chance of the night. Vokes passed the puck up to Buvinow, who was at the center of the blueline, and he immediately dished it to Garbutt at the bottom of the right face-off circle. Garbutt one-timed the puck, beating Milan five-hole for his second goal of the year.

Union got one back at 11:02 of the period when Mike Schreiber fired a shot from the left point. The puck took a funny bounce after deflecting off the stick of a Brown player and sailed up and over Rosen's glove, bouncing off the crossbar, before hitting the back of the net.

The Dutchmen pulled Milan with 2:16 remaining in the game, but to no avail, as the Bears held on for the 5-4 victory.

Rosen finished with 37 saves, including 13 in both the first and third periods, while Milan finished the night with 18. In the midst of a six-game homestand, Brown hosts RPI in a 7:00 p.m. contest tomorrow night at Meehan Auditorium.
