PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal with 4:02 remaining in the first period and freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) made 36 saves to lead the Brown men's ice hockey team (5-4-2, 4-3-2) to a 2-0 victory over Union (7-8-1, 6-2-0) in an ECACHL contest Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
The Dutchmen dominated the first period of play, outshooting Brown 18-10 during the opening 20:00. However, it was the Bears who grabbed the first lead of the contest, scoring a power-play goal at 15:58 of the first period. Freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) started the play in the Brown zone when he hit freshman Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) with a pass along the left boards. Baier sent the puck to senior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) and the Bears' captain fired a rocket past Union's Justin Mrazek on the far side from the top of the right face-off circle.
From there the two teams played nearly 45:00 of scoreless action. With time running out for Union, the Dutchmen pulled Mrazek with 1:40 remaining in the game for the extra attacker. After the Bears iced the puck twice in an attempt to score the empty-net goal, senior Gerry Burke (Milton, MA) banked the puck off the left boards and it slid into the open net for a 2-0 Brown lead at 19:14. Union barely missed scoring the tying goal just before the second Brown goal, but with D'Alba out of position, Oliver Bouchard missed a wide-open net.
D'Alba picked up his first career shutout with 36 saves, including 18 in the first period. The Bears enter a three-week break for exams and the Holidays and will return to action on December 30 when they face Merrimack in the opening round of the UConn Hockey Classic.
