Men's Icers Come Back From 2-0 Deficit And Defeat St. Lawrence 3-2, In Overtime
Dec. 1, 2001
PROVIDENCE, RI - Junior Tye Korbl (Goffstown, NH) scored the game winning goal with just eight seconds left in overtime, and added an assist on the tying goal, as Brown came back from a 2-0 deficit and defeated St. Lawrence to finish the weekend with three points in the ECAC standings.
After a scoreless 20 minutes of play, the Saints got on the board just 4:33 into the second stanza as Jim Lorentz beat Brown senior Brian Eklund (Braintree, MA) with his first goal of the season. St. Lawrence added its second goal less than four minutes later when senior Charlie Daniels scored his seventh of the year on the power play, giving St. Lawrence a 2-0 lead.
However, Eklund and the rest of the Brown defense would shut down the St. Lawrence offence from that point on and fight back from the 2-0 deficit and win in overtime, the Bears' third overtime contest in as many games.
Freshman Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) started the comeback when he scored his first collegiate goal after a scramble in front of the St. Lawrence net. The power play goal, which came at 13:42 of the second, was assisted by sophomore Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) and senior Josh Barker (Swift Current, SASK).
Junior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) tallied his second point in as many games when he collected the puck from sophomore Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE), who scored the lone goal against Clarkson last night, and took a slapper from the point that beat freshman Kevin Ackley. The goal knotted the game at 2-2 at 4:09 of the third, which is how it remained for the next 21:01.
The star of the night, however, was Korbl, as he took Ackley one-on-one, and beat him with a shot from just in front of the crease with eight seconds left in overtime, lifting the entire Brown bench off their feet.
The win marked the first time since a 6-0 shutout of the Saints (also at Meehan) in 2000. Eklund finished with 26 saves, while Ackely totaled 38 for the Saints.
Brown continues action on Saturday, December 8, when they host Harvard in a 7:00 p.m. contest. The game is the last match of the semester as Brown will take a three-week break for exams and the holidays.
