Ihnacak's Two Goals Help Lead Brown Past Clarkson, 4-2
Nov. 26, 2004
POTSDAM, NY - Sophomore Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) scored two goals, while senior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC) and freshman Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) each scored in the third period to break a 2-2 deadlock, and lead the Brown men's ice hockey team (3-4-1, 2-3-1) to a 4-2 victory over Clarkson (3-8-1, 1-4-1) in an ECACHL contest Friday evening at Cheel Arena.
The Bears were all over Clarkson in the opening half of the first period, outshooting the Golden Knights 9-2 during the first 8:41 of the game. Brown wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead, scoring just nine seconds into the contest. Senior Gerry Burke (Milton, MA) dumped the puck into the zone and with Clarkson's goalie behind the net trying to stop the puck, the puck bounced off the boards and into the slot. Ihnacak moved in and collected the puck before burying it into the open net.
The Bears continued to dominate the flow of the game, but the Golden Knights tied the contest at 1-1 at 8:41 on just their second shot of the period, a rocket from the left point that beat freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) on his glove-side.
Brown's Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) took a five-minute major with 4:05 left in the first period, and a penalty on Burke with 1:47 left to play gave the Golden Knights a five-on-three advantage for the remainder of the period. Brown successfully killed Clarkson's power-play until the end of the period, and killed the remainder of both penalties at the start of the second.
Clarkson took a 2-1 lead on a power-play goal at 10:07 of the period, but the Bears tied the contest at 2-2 at 16:59 with a power-play goal of their own. Ihnacak earned his second goal of the night, while freshman Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) tallied the assist on the goal.
At 8:51 of the final period, the Bears added their second power-play tally of the game when Meech deflected a Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) shot past Clarkson's Dustin Traylen. Prough gave Brown a 4-2 lead with 5:21 left in the contest with his second goal in as many games.
D'Alba finished with 22 saves. The Bears continue action tomorrow evening when they face St. Lawrence in a 7:00 p.m. ECACHL contest.
