Box Score

ST. CLOUD, MN - St. Cloud State (5-7-1) scored three straight goals, including two in a span of 2:52 during the second period, to earn a 4-1 victory over the Brown men's ice hockey team (2-5-0) in a non-league game, the Bears' first of the season, on Friday evening at the National Hockey Center. It was the first meeting between the two schools since the 2001-2002 season, when Brown earned a 4-1 victory over the Huskies, then ranked second in the nation, in Providence.

St. Cloud came out flying, and after freshman Sean Muncy (Chesterfield, MO) took an obstruction-hooking penalty just 46 seconds into the game, the Huskies looked to get on the board, skating with the man advantage. The Brown penalty killers were aggressive in holding St. Cloud off the board on the power-play, and junior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) created two quality short-handed bids during the 2:00. However, just six seconds after Muncy returned to the ice, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead when Marty Mjelleli fired the puck past sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL).

However, just 5:00 later, freshman Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) knotted the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal for the Bears. Junior Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) battled for a lose puck along the boards and sent it to junior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) in the corner. After settling the puck, Roux passed the puck to Vokes, who was in the slot, and the freshman tipped the puck past goalie Bobby Goepfert at 8:15 of the period.

The Huskies took a 2-1 lead at 12:06 of the second, just one second after a penalty on sophomore Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) had expired, and then grabbed a 3-1 lead just 2:52 later, at the 14:58 mark.

St. Cloud nearly took a 4-1 lead seven minutes into the third on the power-play, when Bill Hengen fired a shot that beat D'Alba. With the puck sitting on the goal-line, senior Joe Bauer (Apple Valley, MN) was able to clear it away before it crossed over and into the net. The Huskies added a power-play goal with 2:47 left to play for the 4-1 final.

D'Alba finished with 28 saves, including 15 in the first period. The Bears and the Huskies meet again tomorrow evening, November 26, when they face off at 7:00 p.m. at the National Hockey Center.
