Box Score

CANTON, NY - Freshman David Brownschidle (Lawrenceville, NJ) and sophomore Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT) scored two goals in a span of 51 seconds as the Brown men's ice hockey team (1-2-3, 1-1-3) erased a 3-0 deficit to earn a 4-4 tie with St. Lawrence (4-5-2, 1-3-2) on Friday evening at Appleton Arena.

Looking to even its record at .500 for the first time since October 27th, St. Lawrence came out flying and dominated the first 20 minutes of play, peppering sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) with 15 shots. Meanwhile at the other end of the ice, the Brown offense could muster just four shots, which were all turned away by Alex Petizian.

With each team skating four players late in the period, the Saints won a face-off in Brown's zone and Brock McBride skated along the left wing, before firing a shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle that beat Rosen glove-side at 15:34 and with just 13 seconds left on the matching minors.

St. Lawrence appeared to be skating away with a win, adding to its lead 5:53 into the second period, when the Saints capitalized on back-to-back penalties by the Bears. Brown was 19 seconds away from killing the first one when a second Bears player was penalized, giving the Saints a short five-on-three. Sophomore Matt Palmer (Anchorage, AK) was able to clear the puck from the zone to kill the two-man advantage, but Brown still had another 1:41 five-on-four to kill. Sean Flanagan scored with 10 seconds left on the man-advantage to give Saint Lawrence a 2-0 lead.

Brown went up on the power-play at 6:55 of the second and just 11 seconds after it expired, the Saints came down the ice and Kevin DeVirgilio increased their lead to 3-0 beating Rosen glove-side.

The Bears got one back at 14:45 when senior assistant captain Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) scored a short-handed goal with 1:15 left on a Saints' power-play. Prough iced the puck from deep in Brown's zone and it bounced in the crease directly in front of Petizian, who came out to stop it. However, it took an odd bounce and popped over Petizian's stick and into the back of the net.

McMonagle, who scored his first career goal last year in this rink, closed the gap to 3-2 with 14.7 seconds remaining in the second period when he beat Petizian from the top of the right face-off circle. Prough and senior captain Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) each assisted on the goal, as Hurley entered Brown's all-time top 10 for career assists by a defenseman with his 43rd career assist.

The Saints regained a two-goal cushion when McBride stuffed a lose puck past Rosen on a St. Lawrence power-play 3:22 into the period.

However, Brown answered with two goals in the next 1:18 to tie the game at 4-4, 4:40 into the period. Brownschidle started the come back with his first career goal 27 seconds after the Saints' power-play goal, knocking in the rebound of an Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) shot. Freshman Jesse Fratkin (Burnaby, BC) also tallied an assist for his first career point.

Just 51 seconds later, McMonagle tied the game with a highlight reel worthy goal, his second of the night. McMonagle collected the puck from sophomore Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) in the center of the slot, spun around his defenseman, caught Petizian out of position, and lifted a back-hander over Petizian's glove.

Less than two minutes later, at 6:02, St. Lawrence had a goal waved off when referee Mike Baker ruled the puck had been kicked in. Both teams had chances to pull ahead as the third period played out, but neither could find the go-ahead goal as the two teams headed for overtime for the second game in a row and the fourth time in six games.

Rosen finished with 42 saves, while becoming the fastest Brown player to record his 1,000th career save, which he made early in the third period, since Chris Harvey '90 recorded his 1,000th career save in his 31st career game. Alex Petizian posted 22 saves for St. Lawrence. In the midst of an eight-game stretch where all eight games will be played away from Meehan Auditorium, Brown returns to action tomorrow night when it faces #8 Clarkson at 7:00 p.m.
