PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) scored two goals and added two assists, while the Brown power-play scored three goals as the Brown men's ice hockey team (4-1-0, 4-1-0) defeated Princeton (1-5-0, 1-3-0), 5-1, Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
In a similar fashion to last night's game, the Bears grabbed an early lead, scoring the first goal of the contest just 2:41 into the game. After a great play by junior Paul Crosty (Edmonton, ALB) to keep the puck in the zone, the defenseman skate up the left boards and hit freshman Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) with the puck. Roux one-timed it back to Crosty, who sent the puck from behind the net into the slot where freshman Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) was waiting to knock the puck into the back of the net, scoring his first career goal for the 1-0 lead.
The Bears opened the game up in the second period beginning with Ihnacak's first goal. The freshman skate the puck up into the zone and fired a shot from the right face-off circle that beat Princeton's Eric LeRoux five-hole. Sophomore Cory Caouette (Spruce Grove, ALB) and senior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) each earned an assist on the goal, at 6:59 of the second period.
Senior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) scored back-to-back power-play goals for Brown at 9:27 and 11:25 to increase the Bears, lead to 4-0 before the end of the period. The goals, which were nearly identical, came off of great feeds from behind the net from junior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY). Ihnacak also earned assists on both goals. Robinson barely missed a natural hat-trick before the end of the period, roofing the puck into the net just a split second after the referee had blown the play dead.
Princeton got on the board with seven minutes remaining in the third period on a goal by Grant Goeckner-Zoeller, ending senior Yann Danis' (Saint Jerome, QUE) scoreless streak at 162:30, spanning over three different games. Ihnacak netted his second goal of the game, on the power-play, at 15:38 for the final 5-1, finishing the game with four points. Haggett and Robinson each assisted on the goal.
For the game, Danis stopped 20 shots in net. Brown will be off next weekend, but continues action on Tuesday, November 25, when it takes on Providence College in the 18th Annual Mayor's Cup game. The contest, which will be broadcast live on Cox3, will be played at PC's Schneider Arena. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
