PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Aaron Volpatti's (Revelstoke, BC) first goal of the season 7:59 into the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Brown men's ice hockey team (1-1-2, 1-0-2) to a 5-2 victory over Colgate (3-5-1, 0-2-1) on Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium. After earning a pair of ties against the Raiders last season, the Bears used five different goal scorers and a three-goal third period to win their first game against Colgate since February 15, 2003, which was also decided by a 5-2 margin.
Colgate had the better of the opportunities early in the game, and took a 1-0 lead 8:22 in when David McIntyre worked his way around the Brown defense and lifted the puck over sophomore Dan Rosen's (Syosset, NY) shoulder. However, the Bears came alive after the goal and began to control the tempo of the period, finishing with a 15-13 advantage in shots and tying the game at 1-1 with each team skating four players. Senior Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) beat Justin Kowalkoski glove-side high with a wrist shot from the bottom of the right face-off circle at 12:53. The goal was his third point in as many games.
Brown had its first power-play chance 1:34 into the second period and grabbed a 2-1 lead eight seconds later when sophomore Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) scored his first goal of the year. Junior Sean Muncy (Chesterfield, MO) and senior David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI) each assisted the goal.
Colgate tied the game midway through the period when Peter Bogdanich scored on a deflection from the center of the slot. Jason Fredricks fired a slap shot from the right point that was headed wide of the net. However, Bogdanich got enough of his stick on it to deflect it back to the right corner of the net to tie the game.
Much like they did last Saturday against RPI, when the Bears held a 10-2 advantage in shots during the third period, they again dominated the final 20 minutes, out shooting the Raiders, 17-7.
Brown would need only one of those shots as Volpatti's goal would prove to be the difference in the game. Robertson took a shot from the point that was blocked by sophomore Sean McMonagle (Oakville, ONT), but bounced right back up to Robertson, who dished the puck to Volpatti. Volpatti had time to skate around his defender and wind up for a shot that hit the back of the net and bounced out before Kowalkoski had time to react.
Muncy increased the Bears' lead to 4-2 at 13:45, beating Kowalkoski with a low wrap-around for his first of the year.
The Raiders earned a power-play with 2:32 remaining and pulled Kowalkoski with 58 seconds left for a two-man advantage. But Brown was able to kill the penalty and junior Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) added an empty-netter with 22 seconds remaining for the 5-2 final. The Bears finished 6-6 on the penalty-kill and is now 21-22 on the season.
Rosen finished with 29 saves, while Kowalkoski made 37 saves for Colgate. Brown returns to action tomorrow evening against at 7:00 p.m. against Cornell. The game is the final home game of the 2007 calendar year as the Bears don't host a game again until January 5th.
