PROVIDENCE, RI - The men's ice hockey team (3-0-0, 3-0-0) used four different goal scorers and a 35-save performance from junior Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) to defeat visiting Dartmouth (1-3-0, 0-2-0), 4-2, in an ECAC and Ivy League men's ice hockey contest on Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, it marks the first time since the 1994-1995 season that Brown opened its season with three wins.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game as junior Adam Saunders (Moose Jaw, SASK) netted his first goal of the year. The goal, which came at the 4:28 mark, was assisted by junior Shane Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) and sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY).
Danis, who made 17 saves in the first period alone, gave up his first goal in 127:15 when the Big Green knotted the contest at 1-1 on the power-play at 7:15 of the first. However, the tie would not last for long as Haggett tallied his sixth point in three games with his second goal of the year just 35 seconds later. Mudryk and senior Owen Walter (Prince Albert, SASK) earned assists on the goal.
After a scoreless second period, Dartmouth tied the contest once again at 2:15 of the third stanza.
The Bears, who had shutout their previous two opponents by scores of 4-0 and 5-0, did not falter with the score tied and junior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) and senior Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA) combined to get Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) the puck late in the third. Denis fired the game-winner past Darren Gastrock at 12:09 of the third and the Bears held onto the lead for the remaining 7:51.
Senior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) added an empty-netter with just 12 seconds remaining to seal the game for the Bears.
Danis made a season-high 35 saves, while Gastrock stopped 24 shots for the Big Green.
Brown continues action next weekend as the Bears take their first road trip of the season. They will face Clarkson on Friday and St. Lawrence on Saturday.
