Men's Ice Hockey Defeats Vermont, 3-1, in ECAC Action
Nov. 8, 2003
BURLINGTON, VT - The Brown men's ice hockey team (2-1-0, 2-1-0) defeated Vermont (0-5-2, 0-2-0), 3-1, at Vermont's Gutterson Fieldhouse on Saturday evening. The win marked the fifth straight over the Catamounts after sweeping the previous two season series from Vermont.
After heavy pressure from Vermont's offense in the opening minutes, including one power-play, the Bears found themselves on the man-advantage just one second after killing a Vermont power-play. With 19 seconds remaining in the Bears' power-play, freshman Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) dumped the puck into the zone and the Catamounts attempted to clear the puck off the glass. However, it took a bounce back towards the Vermont goalie and slipped into the net for the 1-0 lead at 8:25 of the first period.
However, at 11:30 Vermont evened the score at 1-1 on a goal by Jeff Miles, who knocked in the rebound of a Scott Mifsud shot.
After a scoreless second period, both teams came out with intensity in the third. At 7:01 of the final period, freshman Dylan Row (Winnipeg, MAN) took a shot from the point that Vermont's Scott Sortal saved. However, the rebound bounced out to junior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC), who back-handed the puck up and over Sortal's shoulder on his glove-side for a 2-1 Brown lead.
With time ticking down in the third period, senior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) added an insurance goal for the Bears with 1:10 remaining in the game. Senior Nick Ringstad (Fairbanks, AK) took a shot and Sortal left the rebound out for Robinson to stuff away for the final 3-1. Sophomore Joe Bauer (Apple Valley, MN) also earned an assist on the goal.
For the game, Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE) stopped 24 shots in net, earning his fourth straight win against Vermont. Brown continues action on Friday, November 14, when it hosts Yale in the 2003-2004 home opener.
