Prough Caps Bears' Third-Period Come-Back with Tying Goal at 19:18, as Brown Ties #17 RPI, 2-2
Nov. 3, 2007
TROY, NY - Senior assistant captain Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) scored the game-tying goal with 42 seconds left in regulation and just one second after Brown had pulled sophomore goalie Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) as the Brown men's ice hockey team (0-1-2, 0-0-2) scored two third-period goals to come back from a 2-0 deficit and earn a 2-2 tie with #17 Rensselaer (5-2-2, 0-0-2) on Saturday evening at Houston Fieldhouse.
The Bears came out in the first period, showing no ill-effects from their first weekend with back-to-back league games and matched the Engineers, shift-for-shift and shot-for-shot during a high-paced, hard-hitting first period that saw the two teams each take eight shots.
After failing to score on back-to-back power-play chances just 2:37 apart early in the second period, the Engineers grabbed a 1-0 lead 6:19 in when Andrew Lord redirected a centering feed from Christian Jensen past sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) on a three-on-two rush.
RPI increased its lead to 2-0 at 14:18 when Jonathan Ornelas got around a Brown defenseman and beat Rosen with a low shot.
The Bears cut into the Engineers' lead at 8:49 of the third period when junior Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) ripped a shot from the right face-off circle that beat Jordan Alford, stick-side, finding the back of the net at the far post. Senior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) and junior Matt Palmer (Anchorage, AK) each assisted on the goal, which snapped Alford's shutout streak at 172:01.
The Bears had a power-play chance with 3:35 remaining, but took just two shots on net and could not score the tying goal, finishing 0-2 on the man-advantage.
Brown called a timeout with 52.9 seconds remaining and sophomore Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) won the neutral zone face-off directly in front of the Bears' bench, setting up the game-tying play.
As soon as the Bears made their push up ice, Brown pulled Rosen for the extra attacker with 43 seconds remaining and just one second later, before the six skater had a chance to get in the play, senior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) tied the game with his first goal of the year. Junior Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) and senior Chris Poli (Medford, MA) each assisted on the goal as Brown headed to its second overtime game in a row and 27th since the 2005-2006 season.
Brown dominated the third period and outshot RPI, 12-2 to finish the game with a 29-22 advantage in shots. The Engineers also failed to convert on the power-play, going 0-4.
Rosen finished with 20 saves, while Alford posted 27 saves for RPI. Brown returns to action next Friday evening when it hosts Colgate in its 2007 home opener. The weekend series with Colgate and Cornell (Saturday) marks the Bears' only two home games of the fall semester as 12 of their first 14 games are away from Meehan.
