CAMBRIDGE, MA - Sophomore Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) scored the game-winning goal and senior Brian Eklund (Braintree, MA) stopped 27 shots to lead Brown (1-0-0, 1-0-0) to a 4-2 ECAC and Ivy victory over Harvard (0-1-0, 0-1-0) on Saturday evening at Harvard's Bright Hockey Center.
The Crimson took a 1-0 lead 12:04 into the contest on a two-man advantage. Junior Dominic Moore (Thornhill, ONT) tallied his first goal of the season from just below the blueline after he received the puck from freshman Noah Welsh (Brighton, MA), giving Harvard a 1-0 lead with 7:56 remaining in the first period.
Junior Assistant Captain Tye Korbl (Goffstown, NH) received the puck from junior Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA), who was behind the net, and fired it in for Brow's first score of the 2001-2002 season and tie the game at 1-1 just 2:20 into the second period.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead just five minutes later when junior Chris Legg's (London, ONT) shot was saved, but senior J-F Labarre (St. Adolphe, QUE) was on the crease to knock in the rebound and give Brown a 2-1 lead with 12:25 remaining in the second.
The Crimson tied the contest at 4:38 of the third when freshman Brendan Bernakevitch beat Eklund top-shelf with junior Brett Nowak earning the assist.
However, the Bears regained the one-goal lead just seven minutes later when Denis collected the puck from Kirley and fired it past sophomore Will Crothers at 11:19 of the third. The goal was the first of his career.
Sophomore Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) added an empty net goal with 13 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
For the game, Eklund stopped 27 shots between the pipes for Brown, as the Bears were outshot 29-23.
The Bears continue action next weekend when they travel to Dartmouth and Vermont for games on Friday and Saturday respectively. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
