White Defeats Brown in Annual Brown vs. White Scrimmage

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Men's Ice Hockey team faced off in the annual Brown vs. White scrimmage on Saturday, October 22nd at Meehan Auditorium. The white team, which featured seniors Joe Bauer (Apple Valley, MN), Cory Caouette (Devon, ALB), Pete LeCain (Bridgewater, NS), and Rugo Santini (Winchester, MA), juniors Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT), Dylan Row (Winnipeg, MAN), and Steve Sigaty (Edmonton, ALB), sophomores Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI), David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI), and Seth Seidman (Milton, MA), and freshmen Ryan Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN), Sean Muncy (Chesterfield, MO), Matt Palmer (Anchorage, AK), and Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) earned the 7-6 victory by virtue of a sudden-death shootout.
The teams played two 25:00 periods and played all 50:00 even strength. In the event of a penalty, the team on the other side of the call attempted a penalty shot. In all, the teams were whistled for 17 penalties, scoring on seven penalty shots. The white team opened the game with back-to-back goals scored just 33 seconds apart. Robertson opened the scoring when he converted on a penalty shot against senior Kevin Kliman (Toronto, ONT) at 7:47 of the first period. Just 33 seconds later, Vokes gave the white team a 2-0 lead when he back-handed the puck over Kliman's shoulder off assists from Santini and Caouette.
The Brown team got on the board at 10:53 when senior Jarrett Robertson (Kingston, ONT), beat sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) off assists from sophomores Todd Johnson (Riverside, CT) and Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT). Less than 10 minutes later, Vokes scored his second of the game on a penalty shot against Kliman to give the white team a 3-1 lead at the break.
The Brown team tied the game at 3-3 with back-to-back goals early in the second period. Sophomore Chris Poli (Medfield, MA) converted on a penalty shot 3:52 into the period and at 7:05, sophomore Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) left the puck for freshman Eric Slais (Fenton, MO), who burried the puck past D'Alba, his former Chicago Steel teammate.
Just two minutes later, at 9:08, Muncy scored on a penalty shot for the white team as it took a 4-3 lead. The lead was short-lived however as Jarrett Robertson scored his second of the game off an assist from Prough to tie the game at 4-4 at 13:34 of the period.
Just 1:31 later, at 15:03, the white team worked a perfect three-on-two rush to regain a one-goal advantage. Santini went top shelf on freshman Mark Sibbald (Ridgeway, ONT) off assists from Baier and Caouette. The two teams traded goals on penalty shots in the final five minutes of the game with Baier scoring for the white team, sandwiched between goals from Hurley and Prough for the Brown team, ending regulation in a 6-6 tie.
The two teams squared off in a sudden-death shootout, with the white team up first. Sigaty scored against Sibbald top shelf for the White team and D'Alba saved Hurley's attempt for the Brown team, giving the White team the win.
All three goalies played in the scrimmage. D'Alba stopped a total of 25 shots, allowing six goals, in 37:41, while Kliman made 17 saves on 21 shots in 35:07. Sibbald stopped 22 shots, allowing two goals, 27:12.
