PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (0-0-0) hosted Trois Rivieres on Saturday, in an exhibition contest and came away with a 5-5 tie with the Patriots. Junior Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI), last year's leading scorer, senior Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT), and junior Paul Baier (North Kingstown, RI) led the way for Brown as Prough scored two goals and Ihnacak and Baier each tallied a goal and an assist. Freshman Jeremy Russell (St. Albert, ALB) also had two points with two assists.
The Patriots scored the game's first goal, just 5:51 in when Mathieu Gravel collected the puck from Thiery Proudrier and blasted the puck into an open net, while skating on a five-on-three advantage. That goal though was the only one allowed by sophomore Mark Sibbald (Ridgeway, ONT), who stopped 13 shots through two periods of work.
Brown came alive in the second period, getting on the board when Baier redirected a feed from Russell on a man-advantage. Ihnacak also earned an assist on the goal, which came at 7:46. Less than three minutes later, at 10:32, Prough scored his first, also off a power-play feed from Russell. Junior David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI) collected an assist on the goal, passing to Russell at the right point.
Prough scored his second goal, also on the power-play, at 16:45, to give Brown a 3-1 lead. Junior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) started the play when he fed sophomore Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) in the slot. Vokes redirected the puck to Prough on the left edge of the crease, and Prough fired the puck into the back of the net at the opposite corner for his second of the game.
At the start of the third, senior Antonin Roux (Danville, QUE) wasted little time in increasing Brown's lead to 4-1, scoring just 12 seconds into the period off the opening faceoff. Senior Sean Dersch (Edmonton, ALB) won the draw and fed sophomore Sean Muncy (Chesterfield, MO) with an up-ice pass. Trois Rivieres' Sylvain Michaud stopped Muncy's shot, but the rebound bounced directly out to Roux, and he stuffed the puck home for the 4-1 lead.
The Patriots got one back at 4:14 when Maxime Lemieux-Laramee knocked in the rebound of a shot from Guillaume Lajeunesse. However, Ihnacak gave the Bears a 5-2 lead just 2:44 later, at 6:58, when he collected the puck from Baier and banked his shot off the far post and into the net.
But Trois Rivieres would not go away quietly, and the Patriots closed the game with three unanswered goals, including the game-tying goal with 1:15 remaining to force overtime. Brown outshot Trois Rivieres 3-2 in the extra frame but could not net the winner.
Sibbald finished with 13 saves in 40 minutes, while freshman Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) recorded seven saves in 25 minutes. Brown will return to the ice for practice this week before seeing its first official test of the season next Saturday night, October 28, when the team travels to Merrimack for a 7:00 p.m. game.
