Raiders' Two Second-Period Goals End Bears' Season
March 12, 2005
HAMILTON, NY - Colgate (24-9-3, 14-5-3) scored two goals in the second period and held Brown (16-14-3, 9-11-2) off the board to earn a 3-0 victory over the Bears in Game Two of the ECACHL Quarterfinal best-of-three series, while sweeping the series. With a 16-14-3 record, Brown finishes with its third straight winning season and earns at least 16 wins for the second time in three years.
After Brown's Gerry Burke (Milton, MA) and Joe Bauer (Apple Valley, MN) were called for back-to-back penalties, the Raiders took a 1-0 lead just 11 seconds into their 5x3 opportunity when Tony Masotto (Eden Prairie, MN) fired the puck past freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL), through the five-hole at 6:52 of the second.
Colgate increased its lead to 2-0 at 13:26 of the period when Tyler Burton knocked in the rebound of his own shot from the edge of the crease. Brown had two power-play chances in the third period, but couldn't get past Colgate's Steve Silverthorn. The loss ended Brown's season in the ECACHL Quarterfinals for the second straight year. The Raiders added one more goal with 2:48 left to play after a scramble in front of the Brown net for the final, 3-0.
Brown took three penalties in the final 2:00 of the game, and the Raiders ended the contest with a 5x3 opportunity for the last 1:15, but D'Alba stood strong in net, stopping five shots in the wanning minutes.
D'Alba finished with 28 saves, while Silverthorn made 19 for Colgate. The game was the final career game for the Class of 2005, which finishes its career as one of the winningest classes in Brown history.
