CAMBRIDGE, MA - Harvard scored two goals in the first period en route to a 4-1 win over Brown (14-14-2, 10-10-2) in the first round of the ECAC Championships. The best of three series will continue tomorrow at Harvard's Bright Hockey Center at 7:00 p.m.
Less than three minutes into the first period, the Crimson took a 1-0 lead and extended its lead to 2-0 at 17:17 of the first when Noah Welch blasted a shot through the slot, scoring on the Crimson's first power-play chance of the night.
The two squads played a scoreless second period, but less than one minute into the third, the Crimson took a 3-0 lead on their second power-play goal of the game.
Brown got on the board at the 10:26 mark of the final stanza when sophomore Shane Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) knocked in the rebound of a Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA) shot. The junior skate the puck from coast to coast and crashed into the Harvard goalie, leaving an open net for Mudryk. The Crimson added an empty net goal with 19 seconds remaining for the final, 4-1.
For the game, sophomore Yann Danis (Lafontaine, QUE) finished with 31 saves. The Bears continue action tomorrow when they face Harvard in the second game of this best of three series. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. in Cambridge.
