PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (13-11-5, 10-8-4) scored two goals in a span of 4:48 to hand visiting Princeton (3-25-2, 2-18-2) a 2-1 loss in game one of the ECAC First Round best-of-three series Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
The two teams played two scoreless periods of hockey and headed into the third period deadlocked at 0-0. Looking for an upset over the fifth-seeded Bears, Princeton, seeded 12th, took a 1-0 lead at 6:56 of the final period on a goal by Chris Owen. Linemate Tommy Colclough fired a slap-shot from the right face-off circle, which junior Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) saved. However the rebound fell behind Danis and Owen beat Brown defenseman senior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) to the puck, tapping it over the goal-line for the first score of the game.
However, the Bears fought back and knotted the contest just 24 seconds later. With the face-off to the right of Princeton's Eric Leroux, sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) won the face-off back to sophomore Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ). Leroux attempted a poke-check, leaving the left side of the net wide open for Swon, who tied the game at 1-1 with his third goal of the year at 7:19.
Both teams added pressure on the forecheck, but junior Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) tallied the equalizer at 12:07 of the final period, beating Leroux low and to the right side. Senior Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA) and freshman Cory Caouette (Spruce Grove, ALB) each earned an assist on the goal.
The Bears successfully killed off two penalties during the remaining 7:53 and ghe Tigers puller Leroux with 30 seconds remaining, but couldn't notch the equalizer.
For the game, Danis stopped 30 shots in net, while Leroux made 23 saves for the Tigers. Brown and Princeton will face-off in game two of the series tomorrow, March 8, at 7:00 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
