CANTON, NY - Sophomore leading scorer Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) scored the game-tying goal with 3.3 seconds left in regulation in a seven-goal third period to force overtime, but St. Lawrence (20-15-2, 12-9-1) scored at 4:28 of overtime, winning the ECACHL First Round series, two-games-to-one, and ending the season for the Brown men's ice hockey team (5-20-7, 3-14-5).
After falling behind 1-0 late in the first period, Brown fought back to score four goals in the third and tie the game on Prough's 17th goal of the season with 3.3 seconds left, but St. Lawrence was up to the task in the final 20:00, matching Brown's four goals with three of its own, as the two teams headed to overtime for the second time in the series.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead at 14:51 of the first period when Simon Watson knocked in the rebound of his own shot after the Bears were unable to clear the zone.
Brown opened the second period with a full 2:00 power-play, but the Bears were unable to find the back of the net as St. Lawrence held onto the 1-0 lead. Brown had its best chance of the second period when senior Joe Bauer (Apple Valley, MN) fed senior Pete LeCain (Bridgewater, NS) in the slot, but LeCain's short-handed bid hit Saints' goalie Justin Pesony in the helmet as Brown was kept off the board.
At the other end of the ice, sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) continued his strong play, denying all 20 St. Lawrence shots that came his way during the period.
Sophomore Brian McNary (Edmonton, ALB) tied the game at 1-1 just 2:54 into the third period when his shot from just inside the blue-line soared over Pesony and into the back of the net.
St. Lawrence regained the one-goal lead at 7:51 when Andrzej Sandrzyk skate in on D'Alba's left and slipped a low shot behind him for a 2-1 Saints' lead.
However, less than a minute later, at 8:47, sophomore Chris Poli (Medfield, MA), who had assisted McNary's goal, tied the game at 2-2 when his shot from the goal-line snuck behind Pesony.
St. Lawrence would not quit, and again regained the one-goal lead, at 11:03, when T.J. Trevelyan knocked in a rebound off Mike Zbriger's shot. The Saints went up 4-2 1:32 later, when Zbriger scored on a St. Lawrence power-play.
Just 27 seconds after the St. Lawrence goal, Brown went up on the man-advantage and freshman Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) brought the Bears to within 4-3 at 14:16, lifting a shot top-shelf from the bottom of the right face-off circle. McNary earned his third point of the night and sixth of the weekend with an assist on the goal.
Brown pulled D'Alba with 1:14 left in the game and sophomore leading scorer Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI), who had the game-winner last night in game two, tied the game at 4-4 with just 3.3 seconds remaining in regulation.
Brock McBride won it for the Saints when Kevin DeVergilio threw the puck on net and it deflected in off McBride's skate, ending the Bears' season as they played in their 13th overtime game of the year.
D'Alba finished with 48 saves for a weekend total of 153, while Pesony made 29 stops for St. Lawrence.
