Mens Icers Battle Back From Two-Goal Deficit, But Fall To Yale, 5-3

March 3, 2002

NEW HAVEN, CT - The Brown men's ice hockey team (14-13-2, 10-10-2) battled back from a two-goal deficit, but fell to Yale, 5-3 in an ECAC and Ivy men's ice hockey contest on Saturday evening at Yale's Ingalls Rink.

After nearly a period of scoreless action, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead when they capitalized on their second power-play opportunity of the game at 13:57 of the first period.

Yale took a 2-0 lead on their fourth power-play chance of the night at 7:56 of the second, holding onto that advantage until the 16:41 mark of the period when sophomore Pascal Denis (Magog, QUE) tallied his second short-handed goal of the season to get Brown on the board. Junior Tye Korbl (Goffstown, NH) broke up a pass in the Brown zone and skate in with Denis on his left for a two-on-one advantage. Korbl hit Denis with a centering pass and he fired the puck into the net, bringing Brown to within one at the end of two periods.

The Bulldogs regained the one-goal lead at 4:20 of the third, but just 1:15 later, Korbl fired in the rebound of an Adam Saunders (Moose Jaw, SASK) shot to bring Brown back to within one with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. Junior Chris Legg (London, ONT) also earned an assist on the goal.

Less than two minutes later, sophomore Vince Macri (Durham, NH) fired a slap shot from the right point, resulting in his first goal of the season and knotting the game at 3-3 with 12:38 remaining in the game. The goal was scored after freshman Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ) got the puck to classmate Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC), who skate the puck into the slot and then back-handed it to Macri on the point.

Fighting for the final play-off spot, Yale regained the one-goal lead at 11:37 on a shot that sailed through a screen and past sophomore Yann Danis (Lafontaine, QUE).

The Bears pulled Danis with 1:12 remaining and Yale added an empty net goal with 22 seconds remaining.

For the game, Danis finished with 19 saves. The Bears continue action next weekend when they compete at Harvard in the first round of the 2002 ECAC playoffs.
