PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior Paul Esdale (Edmonton, ALB) scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period, while junior Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) stopped 37 shots as Brown (12-11-4, 10-8-3) and St. Lawrence (10-18-5, 7-11-3) played to a 4-4 deadlock in an ECAC men,s ice hockey contest Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Just 4:15 into the game, Brown took a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE). The Bears, leading scorer one-timed the puck into the back of the net off a feed from sophomore Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ), who was behind the net. Senior Owen Walter (Prince Albert, SASK) also earned an assist on the goal for his first point of the season.
However, in a period which Brown outshot St. Lawrence 11-7, the Saints knotted the contest at 1-1 with just 1:10 remaining in the period as John Zeiler beat Danis five-hole with his 10th goal of the season.
The Bears came out hard in the second, scoring two goals in a span of 4:58 to take a 3-1 lead at 7:48 of the second period. Junior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) battled for the puck along the boards in the Brown defensive zone, sending it across the ice to sophomore Jarrett Robertson (Kingston, ONT) racing down the left wing. Robertson one-timed the puck from the top of the left face-off circle into the top-right of the net, scoring his first career goal 2:50 into the period.
Robinson scored his second of the game at 7:48 to give Brown a 3-1 lead. Swon hit Esdale with a pass as he entered the zone. Esdale skate behind the net and found Robinson, who was on the door-step and lifted the puck into the net for his 12th of the season.
However, St. Lawrence battled back, scoring two unanswered goals in a span of 5:23 to knot the game at 3-3 heading into the third period. The Saints grabbed their first lead of the night at 7:14 of the third period on a goal by Rich Peverly, but the Bears quickly responded just 2:05 later, scoring a power-play goal to knot the game. Sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) sent the puck to junior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) on the left point. Esdale collected the puck from Ford at the right point and he ripped the puck into the pack of the net.
Neither team could score in the remaining 10:41 or in the five-minute extra period and each team gained a point in the ECAC playoff race.
For the game, Danis stopped 37 shots in net. Brown, which is currently in fifth place in the ECAC can still finish anywhere from fourth to sixth and can still gain a first-round bye with a win tomorrow night and a Dartmouth loss. The Bears continue action in their final regular season contest tomorrow night, hosting Clarkson, which tied Harvard tonight, 3-3, at 7:00 p.m. in Meehan Auditorium.
