Bears Fall In Final Minute To Dartmouth, 3-2, in Crucial ECAC Contest.
Feb. 22, 2003
HANOVER, NH - The Big Green (14-12-1, 11-9-0) scored the game-winning goal with just 58.3 seconds left in regulation to hand Brown (12-11-3, 10-8-2) a 3-2 loss in an ECAC and Ivy League men's ice hockey contest Saturday evening at Thompson Arena.
In an important game for both teams, the Big Green and the Bears played a scoreless first period. Brown, despite being outshot 15-5 in the first 20 minutes of play, kept Dartmouth off the board with the outstanding play of junior Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE), who made several saves during back-to-back brown penalties, which included a Dartmouth five-on-three advantage for 1:00.
Momentum picked up in the second period with the Bears taking a 1-0 lead at 13:48 of the second period. Sophomore Gerry Burke (Milton, MA) slipped the puck through the legs of Dartmouth's Nick Boucher for his first goal of the season. Senior Chris Legg (London, ONT), who scored two goals last night against Vermont, and junior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) each assisted on the goal.
However, just 3:50 later, at 17:38, the Big Green knotted the contest at 1-1 on a questionable power-play goal by Trevor Byrne, Byrne ended Danis' shutout streak at 152:36 dating back to last weekend's 5-2 victory over Colgate with the goal, which was scored after he received the puck off of an apparent hand-pass.
Brown's top line struck again, with 6:56 remaining in the game, as senior Jason Wilson (LaSalle, ONT) went top-shelf on Boucher from between the two face-off circles, after collecting the puck from Legg, who was behind the net. Senior Tye Korbl (Barnstable, MA) also assisted on the goal.
Dartmouth was not to be outdone, however, as the Big Green came back and knotted the contest again, just 2:04 later and grabbed a 3-2 lead on a goal by Mike Ouellette after a three-on-one rush down the ice.
