PRINCETON, NJ - Junior Aaron Volpatti's (Revelstoke, BC) fifth goal of the year made it a 2-1 game midway through the second period, but the Tigers scored two third-period goals as #10 Princeton (19-7-0, 13-6-0) posted its third win of the season over the Brown men's ice hockey team (2-20-4, 2-14-3) on Friday evening at Baker Rink.
The Tigers dominated the first period, outshooting the Bears, 19-6, and holding a 1-0 advantage after the first 20 minutes on a goal by Brett Wilson at the 11:47 mark.
Princeton increased its lead to 2-0 at 13:12 of the second period when Lee Jubinville converted a three-on-two rush. After collecting the puck from Wilson, Jubinville skated in all alone on freshman Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) near the bottom of the left face-off circle. Jubinville took two strides and beat Clemente to the near post for his eighth of the year.
The Bears got one back just over a minute later at 14:33 when Volpatti scored his fifth of the season following a face-off win by senior Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) to the left of Zane Kalemba. Vokes won the draw back to freshman Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) at the right point. Buvinow skated over to his left and then passed back to Volpatti at the top of the right face-off circle. Volpatti fired a wrist shot through traffic that beat Kalemba far-side, banking off the far post and in.
The last 20 minutes were relatively even, with the Tigers holding a slight, 17-15, advantage in shots, but the home team put two pucks in the net to post the victory. Princeton regained the two-goal advantage when Wilson converted for his second goal of the night just after a Tigers' power-play had expired. Clemente was lying on his back when the goal was scored after making the initial save on a shot by Kevin Kaiser and Wilson was able to lift the puck into the net before the Bears' defense could clear it.
The Bears pulled Clemente with exactly two minutes remaining for the extra attacker and Tyler Beachell scored an empty-net goal at 19:48 for the 4-1 final. Clemente finished with 43 saves, tying his career-high, while Kalemba stopped 25 shots for Princeton. Brown returns to action tomorrow night when it travels to Quinnipiac for a 7:00 p.m. game.
