TROY, NY - Rensselaer (7-20-5, 6-10-1) scored three goals in the final four minutes of the second period to erase a 2-1 deficit and post a 4-3 victory over the Brown men's ice hockey team (2-18-4, 2-12-3) on Friday evening at Houston Field House. Senior leading scorer Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) led the Bears with a goal and an assist for his eighth multi-point game of the season.
The two teams played a scoreless first period in which RPI held a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Engineers' best chance of the frame came just 6:18 in when Matt Angers-Goulet received a pass from behind the net and had just freshman Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) to beat from the top of the crease. Clemente made the save to keep the game knotted at zero.
Junior Jordan Pietrus (Vermilion, ALB) led Brown in the first 20 minutes, winning four of five face-offs taken and making several key plays, especially on the penalty-kill.
The Bears and Engineers combined for eight penalties in the period, with Brown going 0-3 on the man-advantage and RPI going 0-2.
Brown opened the second period with 1:26 remaining on its fourth power-play chance of the game and junior Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) put the Bears up, 1-0, just 41 seconds after the opening faceoff with his fourth goal of the year. Freshman Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) skated the puck into the zone along the left wing and left it for freshman Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) at the top of the left circle. Buvinow worked over towards the center of the blueline and fired a hard shot that Volpatti tipped in from the top of the crease, beating Allen York five-hole.
However, RPI tied the game at 1-1 less than three minutes later when Justin Smith was credited with his first career goal on an odd play at 3:21. Clemente made the initial save on Jeff Foss, but couldn't corral the rebound and Smith was there to flick the puck back into the net.
Brown regained the lead at the 4:00 mark when freshman Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) scored on the final shot of a series of four consecutive shots by the Bears. Vokes and freshman Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) had back-to-back shots and then Vokes took a third. The rebound popped right out to Maclellan at the bottom of the left face-off circle and he lifted it into the partially open net for his second goal of the season.
The Engineers flipped the lead with three straight goals in the final 3:49 of the period to hold onto a 4-2 advantage heading into the final 20 minutes. RPI scored the first two just 24 seconds apart on the power-play, tying the game at 2-2 when Chase Polacek scored from the top of the left face-off circle with RPI enjoying a two-man advantage. Alex Angers-Goulet then gave the Engineers a 3-2 lead when he knocked in the rebound of a shot from Josh Rabbani at 16:35. Patrick Cullen tacked on an even-strength goal 51 seconds later for the 4-2 lead.
The Bears had 15 seconds remaining on a penalty-kill to start the third and just 13 seconds into the period, Volpatti skated into the zone on a short-handed breakaway. He was able to get a shot off, which York saved, but drew a penalty in the process, giving Brown its seventh power-play of the night. The Bears were able to get a few shots off, but most went wide, as RPI held the 4-2 lead. Brown earned another power-play 3:02 into the period and was able to maintain possession in the zone for nearly the entire two minutes, but could not connect for a third goal.
The Bears got one back at 7:07 when Vokes collected the puck from senior Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) and fired wrist shot from the top of the crease on which York appeared to the have made the save. However, the puck trickled behind York and into the net.
Brown pulled Clemente with 1:13 remaining, but was able to take just one shot, a wrister by Vokes, which was blocked by an RPI defender. Buvinow prevented the empty-net goal with about 15 seconds remaining when he blocked a shot by Andrei Uryadov, but the Bears were whistled for too many men on the ice seconds later, essentially clinching the victory for RPI.
Clemente finished the night with 26 saves, while Allen York made 21 for the Engineers. The Bears return to action tomorrow afternoon when they face Union in a 4:00 p.m. game.
