#10 Brown Men's Ice HockeyTies Union, 2-2
Feb. 13, 2004
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (14-5-5, 12-3-2) tied visiting Union (11-13-5, 5-9-3), 2-2, in an ECAC contest, Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown took a 1-0 lead at 15:46 of the first period on a fluky goal by senior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC). With the two teams in the middle of a line change, Ford jumped up and grabbed the puck out of the air, after a Union clear. The Bears' captain dropped the puck to the ice and dumped it into the zone from center ice, but the puck was headed for the back of the net, and caught Union's Kris Mayotte off guard for the 1-0 Brown lead.
After a scoreless second period, the Bears grabbed a 2-0 lead when sophomore Cory Caouette (Spruce Grove, ALB) hit junior Chris Swon (Mendham, NJ) with a centering pass off the left wing. Swon scored his ninth goal of the year just 5:02 into the final period for a lead few thought Brown would relinquish.
However, with less than three minutes remaining in the game, Union pulled Mayotte for an extra attacker, and at 17:36 of the final period, the Dutchmen got on the board. Again Union pulled Mayotte, and after a Brown icing, Union tied the game on a Matt Vagvolgyi goal off the face-off.
The goal sent the game into overtime, during which neither team scored, for the final 2-2.
Senior Hobey Baker candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE) made a season-high 42 saves for the Bears, including 20 of 22 in the final 25 minutes of play. Brown, which remains in first place in the ECAC with a four-point lead over second-place Colgate, hosts third-place RPI, who trailed Brown by five points, tomorrow night at 7:00 in a key ECAC contest.
