D'Alba Leads Brown Past Union, 3-0, With 24-Save Shutout
Feb. 11, 2005
SCHENECTADY, NY - Freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) posted 24 saves, earning his third shutout of the season, while senior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) posted two assists, as the Brown men's ice hockey team (13-7-3, 8-6-2) cruised past Union (11-18-1, 7-11-0), 3-0, in an ECACHL contest on Friday evening at Messa Rink.
Brown dominated the first period of play, outshooting Union 11-2 during the first 20:00, while allowing just one shot on net during the first 19:05 of the period. After controlling the pay from the opening whistle, the Bears finally broke through on freshman Brian McNary's (Edmonton, ALB) sixth goal of the year.
Brown failed to convert on a power-play that ended at 10:28 of the first. After returning to full-strength, the Bears found themselves deep in their own zone. On a break-out play, senior Gerry Burke (Milton, MA) passed to freshman David Robertson (Saunderstown, MA). Robertson connected with McNary at the far blue-line and McNary snuck the puck past Union's Kris Mayotte at 10:36 for the 1-0 Brown lead.
During a Union 5x3 before the mid-way point of the third period, D'Alba kept the Dutchmen of the board with to straight stops, while lying on the ice. The first was a stick-save and then with D'Alba still lying down, he made a high blocker save on Joel Beal, who was at the edge of the crease.
At 12:45 of the third, freshman Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) knocked in the rebound of a shot from sophomore Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT), while the pair skate in on a two-on-one break. Haggett also assisted on the goal, Prough's seventh of the season and his third goal in four games.
Senior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC) gave Brown a 3-0 lead with a power-play tally at 17:34. Haggett, who posted his second point of the night, and freshman Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) each assisted on the goal.
D'Alba finished with 24 saves for the Bears, earning his third shutout of the season, and his second shutout over Union. Brown continues action tomorrow night when they face RPI in a 7:00 p.m. contest. The game will be televised live on CSTV. It can be seen on Comcast 261 and on DirectTV 610.
