Brown Men's Icers Fall to RPI 4-3 in Overtime

TROY, NY - RPI (9-19-2, 3-11-2) scored the winning goal with just 7.1 seconds remaining in overtime to hand Brown (10-10-2, 8-7-1) a 4-3 loss in an ECAC men's ice hockey contest Saturday evening at RPI's Houston Field House.
With RPI playing in its 26th annual Big Red Freakout, the Engineers grabbed a 1-0 lead at 11:43 of the first period, after pelting Brown's Yann Danis (Saint-Jerome, QUE) will eight shots in the first half of the period, on a power-play goal by Kevin Croxton.
However, just 3:08 later, junior Shane Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) knotted the contest at 1-1, knocking in the rebound of a shot by classmate Nick Ringstad (Fairbanks, AK). Freshman Cory Caouette (Spruce Grove, ALB) notched an assist on the goal as he made the initial pass to Ringstad.
Less than one minute later, at 15:49, sophomore Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) gave the Bears a 2-1 lead after a great rush down the ice with linemates junior Brent Robinson (Pointe-Claire, QUE) and freshman Rugo Santini (Winchester, MA). Robinson and Santini has a quick succession of shots with Haggett knocking in the rebound of Santini's shot, as he earned his first collegiate assist on the goal.
The Engineers added another goal to knot the contest at 2-2 with 33 seconds remaining, as the two teams headed into the first intermission tied at two.
After nearly an entire period of scoreless action, RPI scored another late goal to take a 3-2 lead into the final period. Scott Basiuk, who netted the Engineers' second goal, scored on a slap shot with 1:18 left in the second period.
Haggett scored his second goal of the game just 2:27 into the final period, knotting the contest at 3-3. Sophomore Paul Crosty (Edmonton, ALB) and junior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) each earned assists on the goal, which sent the game into overtime after the final 17:33 remained scoreless.
After several missed opportunities by both teams in then extra session, the Engineers sent the freakout home crowd home happy as Ryan Shields scored the winning goal with just 7.1 seconds left on the clock.
For the game, Danis stopped 34 shots. Brown continues action next weekend in a home series with league-leading Cornell on Friday, February 14, and Colgate on Saturday, February, 15. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. both nights at Meehan Auditorium.
