NEW HAVEN, CT - The Brown men's ice hockey team (14-5-4, 12-3-1) scored two unanswered goals in the final period to hand Yale (11-12-0, 9-7-0) a 4-1 loss, in an ECAC and Ivy League contest, Saturday evening at Ingalls Rink, earning their first season sweep over the Bulldogs since 1995-1996. The road sweep of the Ivy foes Princeton and Yale is Brown's fourth ECAC weekend sweep of the season, and gives the Bears a 7-1-1 record in Ivy League play, with one Ivy game left, against Dartmouth on February 27th.
Coming off an emotional loss to Harvard, the Bulldogs came out flying, forcing Brown to ice the puck twice within the first minute of play. However, it was the Bears who opened the scoring, taking a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the game.
Skating on its first power-play of the night, senior Brent Robinson (Pointe Claire, QUE) gave Brown a 1-0 lead just 34 seconds into the power-play opportunity. Freshman leading scorer Brian Ihnacak (Toronto, ONT) and senior Scott Ford (Fort St. John, BC) each posted assists on the goal, their second and third points in two games, respectively.
However, with less than two minutes remaining in the period, and with Brown killing its second penalty in a row, the Bulldogs equalized the score at 1-1 with a Jeff Hristovski power-play tally, as Brown was returning to even-strength.
Midway through the second period, with Brown on their third power-play of the night, senior Vince Macri (Durham, NH) gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with an extra-man goal, one-timing the puck past Yale's Josh Gartner off a pass from Robinson, who was behind the net. Ihnacak also earned an assist on the goal for his second point of the night.
Again, Brown had to kill back-to-back penalties, less than eight minutes into the third period, but the penalty-killing unit, which is ranked first in the country, stood tall to keep the Bulldogs from tying the game. With 13 seconds remaining in the second Bears' penalty, senior Nick Ringstad (Fairbanks, AK) tallied an unassisted short-handed goal at 8:52 to give Brown a 3-1 lead.
With 6:43 remaining in the game, junior Mike Meech (Coquitlam, BC), who scored two goals last night at Princeton, gave Brown a 4-1 lead with his sixth goal of the year. Junior Les Haggett (Norwood, NY) and Robinson , who posted his third point of the night, each earned assisted on the goal.
Senior Hobey Baker candidate Yann Danis (Saint Jerome, QUE) made 32 saves for the Bears, who continue action at home next weekend, hosting Union and RPI in a weekend series at Meehan Auditorium.
