Bears Fall to Dartmouth, 3-1
Feb. 5, 2005
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown men's ice hockey team (12-7-3, 7-6-2) dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Dartmouth (12-9-2, 9-7-0) in an ECACHL and Ivy League contest Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium. The two teams entered the game tied for fifth place in the ECACHL. With the loss, the Bears fall to sixth place, two points behind fifth-place Dartmouth and four behind fourth-place Vermont.
After nearly an entire period of scoreless action, the Big Green scored back-to-back goals just 2:29 apart to take a 2-0 lead before the first intermission. Garret Overlock opened the scoring at 17:31 with a rocket from the right point. Grant Lewis and Lee Stempniak each assisted on the goal.
With just 10 seconds remaining in the period and with Brown's Sean Dersh in the penalty box for a hooking call, Mike Ouellette scored what would prove to be the game-winner, knocking the puck in from the edge of the crease off a centering pass from Stempniak.
Senior captain Les Haggett (Norwood, NY), who scored two goals in last night's win over Vermont, brought the Bears to within one at 14:35 of the second period. Junior Rugo Santini (Winchester, MA) skate in along the right boards and set up Haggett with a drop-pass that Haggett one-timed past Dartmouth's Dan Yacey for his team-leading 10th goal of the year.
Brown pulled freshman Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, IL) with 52 seconds remaining for the extra attacker and Stempniak added an empty-net goal at 19:43, knocking the puck in past an out-stretched Haggett.
In net for Brown, D'Alba recorded 42 saves, two shy of his career-high, while Yacey made 20 saves for the Big Green. The Bears continue action next weekend when they travel to New York's Capital District to face Union and RPI.
