PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior David Robertson (Saunderstown, RI) scored his second goal of the game to break open a 1-1 tie and help lead the Brown men's ice hockey team (2-14-4, 2-8-3) to a 4-2 victory over Harvard (7-10-3, 6-7-2) on Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium, as the Bears won their first game since November 9th. Senior Sean Hurley (Rutland, VT) tallied two assists, picking up the 50th and 51st of his career, while sophomore Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) also had two assists.
Playing in front of one of its largest home crowds of the season, the Bears came out energized and outshot Harvard, 7-4, in the first period, despite having to kill two more penalties than the Crimson did in the opening 20 minutes.
Just 1:42 into the game, Robertson scored his first goal of the season to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Junior Mike Stuart (Rome, NY) crossed the puck down to Robertson at the top of the left face-off circle and the assistant captain sent a blistering shot on net that Kyle Richter didn't see until it had bounced back out of net with the red light on behind him.
After killing five Harvard power play opportunities, the Crimson finally broke through on the man-advantage with 30 seconds remaining on their sixth chance to tie the game at 1-1 at 14:14 of the second. Alex Meintel was stationed in front of the crease and tipped a shot from Jimmy Fraser past sophomore Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY).
However, the Bears responded with two special teams goals of their own 2:22 apart to grab a 3-1 lead heading into the final period. Robertson scored his second of the night on a four-on-three Brown advantage at 16:18 when his shot from between the face-off circles deflected into the back of the net off of Richter's pads.
Then, with Harvard on another power play, sophomore Jordan Pietrus (Vermillion, ALB) increased Brown's lead to 3-1 with a short-handed tally at 18:40.
Hurley assisted both of these goals to earn the 50th, which came on Robertson's second goal, and 51st assists of his career, as he joins classmate Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI) on Brown's all-time list of players with at least 50 career assists. It marks just the ninth time that at least two members of the same class have recorded at least 50 career assists, and the first since the class of 1996.
Junior Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA) provided some insurance for the Bears when he scored his second goal in three games just 57 seconds into the third period to increase Brown's lead to 4-1. The Crimson would get another goal before the end of the game as Joe Smith banked a shot from behind the net into the goal off of Rosen's leg.
Rosen finished with 32 saves, including 28 over the final two periods, while Richter made 16 stops for the Crimson. Brown returns to action tomorrow afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. tilt with Dartmouth. The first 150 Brown students to enter the game will receive a free Wachusett Mountain lift ticket. Tickets are available by calling (401) 863-2773.
